Welcome

Things are looking green at Bluegreen!

The people at Bluegreen Communities comprise a talented team of developers, planners, designers, customer service agents and more. But like you, we don't define ourselves by our careers or job descriptions. We are, first and foremost, parents and grandparents, neighbors and friends, members of families. And because of that, like many Americans, we are concerned about the legacy we leave for future generations - after all, it's our children and grandchildren who will benefit the most from changes we can make right now.

For over 40 years Bluegreen Communities commitment to responsible land use, environmental protection, as well as the safekeeping and conservation of its communities through reasonable protective covenants, ensures that they can be enjoyed by generations to come.

That's why Bluegreen is doing more than "talking green" - we are launching company-wide initiatives to expand upon the ideas of responsible land use and development that have long been a cornerstone of our business practices. We want to be the global leader in environmentally responsible land development.

Bluegreen has partnered with Dr. Charles Peacock, a noted professor, scientist and researcher at North Carolina State University. Our goal is simple - create the perfect place where people, wildlife, and the local ecosystem can live together in balance and harmony.

A green example: Chapel Ridge, North Carolina Chapel Ridge, a Bluegreen Golf Community in the Raleigh-Durham area, is currently certified in three of six categories of the Audubon International's Cooperative Sanctuary for Golf Courses program, we will be fully certified by mid summer.

We've enhanced our wildlife habitat, including the installation of birdhouses and habitat for small game.

Keeping a golf course beautiful has special demands, but we're setting the standard for use of lawn and garden chemicals throughout the community, with "no spray" buffers around ponds, twice the recommended buffer around streams and a 200-ft. buffer around all wetland areas. Our chemical storage facility exceeds containment standards, and we use integrated pest-management planning for our golf course to minimize chemical use. Storm water runoff is managed by a sophisticated holding system, and we regularly monitor and test groundwater, ponds and streams to check our progress. In the two years since implementing these controls, we have had perfect results. We've proven it's possible to manage large green areas without polluting!

Over 40% of Chapel Ridge is open space - a full 15% of the community is non-disturbed open space. Old-school developers try to squeeze every inch of profit from a community, but open space reduces environmental stress (and make for a more beautiful community). A density of less than one building per acre just adds to the sense of space and peace.

We're good neighbors, too, with expensive shielding on streetlights to reduce upward light pollution, and water-saving technologies like Reclaimed Wastewater Irrigation, reducing our water usage. And we recycle aluminum, glass, and plastic.

Many American corporations complain about the costs of plans like these, and while lobbyists fight to weaken environmental laws, we believe that this is an investment in our future and the quality of life for our children and generations to come. And, as a business decision, we know it makes our product more compelling when our landowners know we're taking steps to protect their surroundings and create a sustainable community.
